What are limited edition prints?
Limited edition prints are reproductions of original artwork that are limited in the number of editions, or print runs, available. The number of prints available is really up to the artist. In contrast, open ended prints are usually of the same quality but are not limited in number. Posters are different again. These aren’t restricted in number and tend to be printed on different paper. As such, they are the cheapest option but come with some limitations that don’t apply to fine art limited edition prints.
Limited edition prints are always numbered so you know which one you have. It also allows us artists to catalogue our editions.
Let me unpick all the reasons why limited edition prints are worth buying, and what makes them so special and in demand.
The refined printing process
The quality of limited edition prints is very important. Given that they are collectibles and a worthy investment, making sure they are of a premium standard is a priority.
My contemporary coastal limited edition prints are produced using a giclée (pronounced gee-clay) printing process. Giclée means “to squirt or spray” and uses tiny droplets of ink to recreate the original image. The precision is incredible.
Its superior quality means that every brush mark, texture and blob of paint is emulated in the limited edition you purchase. It’s richer and offers more depth compared to other printing methods and the end result is as close to an original painting as you can get.

Limited edition prints last a lifetime (well, longer actually)
The printing process is so good that giclée prints are known for their preservation qualities. They last at least 125 years without fading, even if hung in direct sunlight.
My contemporary fine art prints are reproduced on archival Hahnemhühle paper. This museum grade paper company has been producing artist papers for almost 500 years! Their paper sustainable and responsible, and made with spring water. The quality is outstanding and quite frankly, I wouldn’t use anything else for my limited edition coastal prints.

Limited edition means limited in number
One benefit of investing in a limited edition print is its rarity and exclusivity. By purchasing one of a small number of prints, you are able to own something scarce. They really are collector items. The number of editions, or print run, for each image is very much up to the artist. So far, mine have never exceeded a print run of 50. Likewise, artists may decide to have the same image available in different sizes. Each size has it’s own print number.
All limited edition prints should are numbered and named so you know which edition number you have purchased. Most artists put these details on the border of the print whereas others provide a certificate of authentication. They will be signed too. I have an embossed signature on mine; it looks very smart (if I do say so myself).
Of course, once they are gone and all numbers are sold, that’s it!

Not just a financial investment
Limited edition prints offer an affordable way to invest in art. The decision to by art is personal; who knows why we are drawn to one image more than another, similar piece of artwork. What matters is you are owning something that evokes a feeling in yourself. Purchasing a fine art print is an emotional investment, one that will bring you joy while connecting with the artists style and vision.
Decorating our homes with pieces of art we love to look at is important. It brings fulfillment and satisfaction..There is an emotional return when we look at something aesthetically pleasing - why wouldn’t we want to experience this everyday?
For someone else
Purchasing a limited edition print for someone else makes for a thoughtful and timeless gift. It’s a bit different and definitely an item treasure.
Plus, by purchasing a fine art print, you are continuing to support local artists and galleries, and we are all grateful for that.
